This is a huge event!  You may have seen the signs posted around town.  DUMC does this every fall and spring to raise money for Mission trips.

I have gone several times and have always come away with my arms full of good and useful stuff, and without having to break the piggy bank!

For families, there is a playground right there, so you can come and shop and then stay to play.

If you've cleaned out your closet from the winter and have stuff you no longer need, DUMC is accepting donations through Wednesday, April 25th 1pm.

You may shop Friday, April 27th from 8:30am - 7pm and Saturday, April 28th from 8:30am - 2pm.

Shh...Here's a secret...at 2pm on Saturday, everything is FREE!

The Trees Need Love, Too!

When was the last time you hugged a tree?

"Chimpanzee" Makes for a Great Earth Day-Themed Outing!

A wonderfully, sweet movie by DisneyNature. The movie follows a clan of chimpanzees around their territory in the jungle and focuses on a young chimp named Oscar. As we were watching him discover and try new things, I kept being reminded of my own infant child.

We were further entertained by Tim Allen's narration. At first, I could've done with out his voice, but then realized it definitely helped move along the movie and explain things to us. The images were so amazing, making it feel at times that we were really there observing these creatures in their natural habitat, where I even wanted to get my camera out and take a picture!

I had been worried about having to watch graphic and violent scenes amongst the chimpanzees, but they did a good job cutting all that stuff out. Probably because it was made by DisneyNature. I would say that this movie is good for ages 5 and up. It's just over an hour long.

To read more details about the summary and get some fun activities to go along with "Chimpanzee," see my previous post here.

Horseback Riding Lessons in Dexter

I love this idea. Good to know of a place close by, Happy Hooves. I found out about them through Living Socia'ls deal today. For $60 (50% off), you get three lessons.

After looking over their website, I am going to wait on the deal, but am surely going to keep this place in mind for when my daughter turns four. For $25 a lesson, she will get 30 minutes that are geared towards helping the young rider become comfortable around horses.

Discovered a Tree Frog Today!

This blog is about discovering all that this area has to offer and learning new things, right? Well, today we learned "Cope's Gray Treefrog," aka "Hyla chrysoscelis" inhabits the area.

We found him on our deck this afternoon and transported "Dorothy Hopper" (a name given to him by our mini scientists today!) to our yard. We put him in the grass, but near dirt, wood chips and a tree, to give him many options for finding a new home. We stayed a few minutes to observe what he would choose, and it was the tree! He blended in perfectly!

Many things were learned from such a simple observation - what a "Cope's Gray Treefrog" looks and feels like, where it lives, how it protects itself from predators with camouflage, and the difference between frogs and toads.

Here are two links for you, if ever you see this little guy hopping near you...!

Family Fun at the Spring Valley Trout Farm!

This place looks great for families. I think I've driven by it a couple of times, but never gave it a second thought until the Dexter Patch wrote an article on it today. This will have to be our kiddos first fishing experience...!

For $5 per person (under 5 if free!), you get a pole, bait, and use of the picnic grounds which includes covered pavilions, as well as barbecue pits for visitors’ use, a kids’ play area and an authentic log cabin.

As for the locally grown fresh fish, you pay for what you catch. Rainbow Trout are $6.39 per pound and catfish are $5.09 per pound.

The farm opens May 5th, but will only be open Saturdays and Sundays through Memorial Day. Days and hours from Memorial Day through Labor Day are Wednesday - Sunday, 9am -6pm.

No fishing license required.

Life jackets for small children must be worn. You may use one of theirs or bring your own.

Can't wait to try it out!

Having fun at Hudson Mills!

Chimpanzee! Activities and Summary...

My husband and I are going to see this movie, so I will be sure to write a review after that. In the meantime, here is a summary of Disney's movie, "Chimpanzee" and some fun activities for parents and educators...

CHIMPANZEE

True Life Adventure, Rated G. Opening Day is April 20, 2012

Disneynature takes moviegoers deep into the forests of Africa with “Chimpanzee,” a new True-Life Adventure introducing an adorable young chimp named Oscar and his entertaining approach to life in a remarkable story of family bonds and individual triumph. Oscar’s playful curiosity and zest for discovery showcase the intelligence and ingenuity of some of the most extraordinary personalities in the animal kingdom. Working together, Oscar’s chimpanzee family—including his mom, Isha, and the group’s savvy leader, Freddy — navigates the complex territory of the forest.

The world is a playground for little Oscar and his fellow young chimps, who’d rather make mayhem than join their parents for an afternoon nap. But when Oscar’s family is confronted by a rival band of chimps, he is left to fend for himself until a surprising ally steps in and changes his life forever.

Here are is a link to find some great ACTIVITIES!!!

Enjoy!
